I saw this a few days ago...

Riding alone used to be how all the hardbooters leaned to carve.  The pace is slow even if the speed is high; it takes longer to get down to the lift when you're covering so much ground.  Plus, most of us were on easy groomed terrain while everyone else was crashing through the trees and riding all over the mountain.

So it demanded a certain type of person who wanted to spend all his time riding alone working on one specific skill when all his friends were off somewhere else charging together as a group.  This is why we find so many "unique" characters amongst the Montucky crew, for example.  Lone wolves all, rule breakers and non-conformists.

These days it's much easier to find people who want to carve together.

I'm just slaying...

That popped up in my feed as well.

“Sigma” seems to be the contemporary term, and some of those traits certainly align with my personality.

It’s great to have a riding buddy at the same pace, and even fun to do the occasional group ride, but I do solo a lot.  I love the serenity in the hills. I’m a failure at meditation. Riding is one of the few times that my mind is quiet and I’m truly present in the moment.

Riding alone is a lot of fun. You’re riding alone anyway, it’s not like you’re talking as you’re turning… I used to ski and snowboard alone when I grew up because I had too much stamina for my grandparents and were too fast for my younger sister

But riding with friends is also fun. Catching up between runs, discussing the snow, technique or whatever on the way up. There’s also something about the group joy of finding untracked powder.

I definitely go into a meditative state on runs regardless if I’m riding with friends or alone
