Hi
I'm looking for a decent board for carving on a budget, if
possible ?
I would really like to buy a C4, but I think it is a lot of money for a board that is only used for a week every year. I know this board will last for many years and if you divide it over the years, it is not a lot.
Anyway, I don't have 2500 CAD(+
tax + shipping to Europe) on the budget now (maybe I need to find it :-D).
I started snowboarding 30 years ago and always with carving in mind.
My technique is not perfect, but the last couple of years I have been focusing on getting it right.
That is also why I'm thinking the C4 maybe is a little bit too advanced for my technique and I should buy a board on my way to the "ultimate" board ?
My biggest issue is to find a board in Europe, designed for carving and wide enough the accommodate my size 45 eur size boot and not costing +2500 CAD
Most wide boards are powder- or all mountain boards, which I don't find suitable for what I expect from a board.

Is is possible to find something useful, or do I need to get on with it, rob a bank and buy a C4 ?

45 Euro might be your shoe size, but what is your mondo foot size?

If it's really 295mm or more, options are certainly limited without some seriously steep binding angles!

@board-doctor Yes, 29,5
I ride with a 35-15 stance. I've been upto 45-15. Been riding Flow bindings since the very frist one with the pull-strap, because of the short base.

@carvehard Exegi boards cost less than the metal C4.  Doneks also but I would lean towards Exegi for better performance.  The website is back up again, contact Carl for a custom board!

@wild-cherry Still in Canada, but at more affordable price.
Thanks, I'll look into those...
Maybe a 2nd hand C4, if any available in my size ?

@carvehard Sold all the prototypes in the spring.   There may be one used G5 168 available mid December but the G4 (C4) is probably what you want, the G5 is recommended for experts only...

Sometimes we get boards with cosmetic blemishes that we sell at a discount, but usually it's only $100 off and there are none right now.  I get some random wide boards from a few manufacturers throughout the season, but Jasey's full metal boards go for about $1800 used.

My advice is to get the G4 now.   It's designed specifically to help riders level up.   If you get something lower performance it's just gonna be that much harder to make it carve the way you want it to.   This board is so forgiving, and that means it'll stay in the carve even when your technique is off.

G4 and G5 168 x 295mm waists are being pressed this week, 171 x 300mm are next.   You will probably want a 168, it's a little narrower but the sidecut is also smaller so the turns are tighter and that keeps your speed (and risk) down.

@wild-cherry would really love just to go with the C4.
I must take the old terible board this season and save up some cash for the next season.

What would the new extra wide Stranda cheater cost you?

https://www.strandasnowboards.com/product/cheater-snowboard/

With a 285 waist and only an 8.5m sidecut, it’s got a pretty fat tail… rear underfoot width is probably similar to the G4.  It’s not titanal, so it should be less expensive.

Hi!

Here in europe the widest thing i´ve seen is soul sg 64xt (tapered hammerhead, 280ww...), you can find it in titanal or not titanal versions... they are not cheap either... but maybe you can find a second handed in your country easier...

Regards.

@carvehard Where in Europe are you? I have the smallest G4 (286 waist width) coming to me in Stockholm Sweden (it's in Belgium right now). It has approximately the same width at the inserts as the X-Wide Cheater, 292 mm for 162 G4 vs 293 mm for the Cheater.

I'll most likely bring to France twice this winter, Serre Chevalier January 24-31 and Tignes/Val D'Isere March 21-28. It's not entirely unlikely that I do a weekend trip to someplace like Åre and I'll definitely make several day trips to the "mountains" 2-ish hours north (Kungsberget/Romme) and I'll ride locally in Stockholm (Lidingö and/or Flottsbro) too if we actually get any snow this year...

Maybe a Jones Freecarver 9000S 164cm , yes I know, it is not really a carving board, but in the range and far more a carving board than my current 160 All mountain board.
You can get a Freecarver 9000S at approx. 800 CAD

Hi Felix
I'm from Denmark, Copenhagen area.

It is very hard to find real carving snowboarders round 😀

Most snowboarders in Europe are either park, freeride/off-piste oriented or chattering sideways down the slopes. I have tried to find a dedicated carving instructor, but it seems impossible. when you see a snowboard instructor teaching carving and he set his board up to duck-stance, you know it not real carving. 😭

I'm going to Trysil in week 4

@carvehard Ok. I suspected as much because I think read somewhere on the forum that your name was Rasmus so I was like, ok, Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (or maybe German) 😀

I think it's just a case of most snowboarders being more park-focused. But I actually saw a hardbooter the one day I got to Kungsberget last winter.

If the winter is better than last I can actually really recommend the ski test weekends that Skistar arranges. I did the one in Sälen last year because Stranda was going there. There were tons of snowboard brands there, and I had a great chat with Stranda-Mats and he said there's way more brands now compared to a few years ago. If you can get away for another weekend with some friends I'd say it's definitely worth it if you check with Skistar which vendors they have locked down. I think I remember seeing Stranda, Jones, Capita, Libtech, Burton, Bataleon, Nitro and K2 at least. Three friends and I spent 2500 SEK/person (<11k total) to get our own room to sleep in in Sälen, plus food and travel of course. Downside was that there was just two slopes open because of the warm weather last winter.

Regarding instructors.. I'm going with UCPA to France, and you get instructors included in the price, and only works if you're younger than 55, unless you go on their "old people" or "family" weeks. I don't have high hopes for them understanding me not riding duck, but I'll report back with my experiences. I need time on the mountain to get better at everything anyway.

It’s a carving board, and I’ve seen someone taking the 9000 across the hill just fine.  It’s not just down the fall line like some say, it has a tighter sidecut than most freecarvers.

I’ve got a 6000 myself, which actually gets wider at the tips.  Every turn is kind of the same though, you don’t really manipulate turn shape with edge angle.  I often ride it on our Big WhiteOUT days when I want to keep my speed down.  The smooth flex, ash topsheet and traction bumps make it decent on icy hardpack as well.  But it has gotten pretty soft.

@superfelix I'm a finnish guy living in Grenoble. I agree that carving specific events, gear or even people, are pretty rare around here...
Don't hesitate to contact me about those dates, I'd love to arrange some meetup  with likeminded carvers (this is a general invitation btw, let's make our own carver's reunion around here).
I haven't tried UCPA but all my friends have, it's pretty ok and I hope you'll have great instructors!

@carvehard back to your gear question : there's no real shortcut here. Stranda Cheater is 950€, and probably the best off the shelf model? similar widths can be found with the Lib Tech Skunk Ape Camber (285mm max), Never Summer Proto (284mm max), a few others like LTB P TEAM 286mm at around 600€. Douk snow has the Freighter, 308mm waist but short effective edge.
You're stuck between narrowish carving boards (I have a Freecarver 9000 164 also) or wider non carving specific boards, but those can work surprisingly well as I've learned with my Capita Powder Twin 162 (park / powder board).

As I understand, cheaped real weapons are Exegi and Donek. JJA for ultimate performance.
