G'day internet people!

Firstly a big thank you to this forum, community and Mr. Cherry's fantastic YouTube videos. Shout out to the Velvet Spoon who recently gave me fantastic carving advice and suggested I post here.

I’d love feedback on my heelside carves. This clip focuses on heels, but toeside advice is welcome. With Velvet Spoon’s help I’ve made some big form changes that aren’t fully settled yet, though I’m very excited about the progress.

Apologies for the shaky camera work. The follow cam is me giving it everything I can. The standstill clip is me trying to me smooth and controlled. Happy for footage to be used in analysis!

Rider: 176cm. 65kg. US 8.5. 3 years of riding (surfing background). 33.
Location: Thredbo, Australia. End of season conditions- warm, slushy and a bit patchy in sections, chill green run.
Equipment:
159 Korua Pencil. My daily driver and not my specific carving board. Effective Edge: 1160. Running Length: 1030. Nose width: 311. Waist Width: 260. Tail Width: 284. Avg. Sidecut Radius: 8.1m.
Bindings: Rome Katana
Stance: 51cm. +30 +21.

Thanks kindly! Wishing you a fantastic season ahead.

I changed the video from private to public so hopefully the embedded video works soon..

I haven't seen it mentioned on the form and recently discovered this myself (probably well known)..

< 1 frame backwards
> 1 frame forwards
Shift + , Reduce playback rate by 0.25
Shift + . Increase playback rate by 0.25
Left arrow Skip behind 5s
Right arrow Skip ahead 5s

@drk_lns Welcome to the forum, thanks for posting!

I do some video analysis here for free sometimes like @velvetspoon suggested, but this clip is hard to work with man...  Your videographer either had too much coffee or he's jonesin' for another hit of crack.  The Blair Witch effect is hard to watch.

For real though, the zoom is just set too high.  1.4 zoom is about the maximum I'll use without a tripod.

What I can tell you is this: your surfing background shows in this clip and you're looking good!  I think you're pretty close to maxing out the capacity of the Korua, I've ridden that model I can say with confidence that it's not well named...  Fun board, but it a stretch to make real pencil lines carves with it.  It's better suited to powder and off piste riding; slashy turns.  You're a prime candidate for the G4 162 Soft Flex available in the store right now.  It's for 240mm longer effective edge, an 11m sidecut and it's a lot stiffer too.  This board will make Pencil Line carves with far less effort, you'll love it!

Also, 51cm is quite a narrow stance for your height.  It suits your style and maybe that short board too, but I would recommend that you try 53 or 55cm just to see how that feels for you.

Come back with some better footage and we can look more closely at the technique.

Hi!

They seem´s very good from my perspective and level... i hope i could do so low heel side turn some day 🙂

If i could say something, i´ll try to practice not to touch the snow with hands, both toe and heel side, just to practice what James use to say... keep your shoulders level 🙂 Also, if you have that kind of wide piste to practice i´ll try to do the closest C turns i were able to do, trying to end the turn at least perpendicular to the fall line.

Anyway, those turns look pretty good!

This is what I was trying @drk_lns to say when I wrote:

It probably just came off like I was just trying to sell you a new board, and that's not entirely untrue, but you will need an upgrade to advance far.  Despite it's name, the Pencil Line is not a good board for making pencil lines...

Happy to help with technique too, I just need better video to work with please.

James

🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

We have been giving each other endless crap for how bad we film each other, thanks for the good laugh (and ammo I can use against him).

Thank you! I’ve been experimenting with stance angles and width. A few years ago this would’ve felt too narrow and too positive, but after moving it back and forth a few times it now feels the most natural. Weird!

Ah! It's such a hard one to fix. Given the snow we have I manage to donk my fingers on a chunky bit of ice/rock and burn through a silly amount of gloves.

When I started working on bottom turns (surfing) I would always use the hand touching the water as a prompt to get my shoulders open and in the right position. It's been deeply ingrained. Every time my mind focuses on a different part of the turn it is the very first thing I forget to do!

Were lucky to have a few narrow runs that force you to tighten up your turns. I'll be sure to lap them more.

Not at all mate. I had a quick go on Velvetspoon’s Stranda Cheater and now see the value of a carving board like the ones recommended here. I’m early in my research, so any advice or recommendations are most welcome.

I shall report back with better footage soon! 🙂

Much gratitude for the kind words and recommendations so far!
