I got my c4 after the season ended here in Maine.  I was surprised it doesn't have the classic Jasey Jay black with red J graphics. It looks good though in grey.

Is "big snowboards" the new brand name for the collaborative between James and JJ?

Pics?  I wasn't aware that they had changed... the original run was actually a dark grey rather than his usual black.

I'll leave the "Big Snowboards" question to @wild-cherry

Big SB is Jasey's new brand!  I still do the marketing, sales and customer service but the brand belongs to JJA.  So yes, in a way it's a collaborative effort, but it's still Jasey's brand.

There will be some changes for next season but mostly graphics and logos.  The JJA C4 remains unchanged, except now it's the Big Snowboards G4!

You got one of the first Big SBs out of the press @justin-doan, if things go according to plan this will be a collector's item in ten years.  There is only a small handful of boards out there that are embossed "C4" instead of "G4".  I anticipate that these boards will have a lot of influence over carving board design over the next decade.  This was a ground up design project for all those riders that are frustrated with the carving performance of previously available boards: it's not one of these detuned race boards that the top European brands are marketing, or an all mountain that can carve a bit like every other brand promotes.

The main differences are three: first is the way Jasey uses the Titanal and other materials in specific combinations in harmony with the shape, base profile and flex pattern to achieve the specific ride characteristics that I requested.  Second is how the C4/G4 grips so well without locking in; it transitions so smoothly from a carve to a slide and back again without chattering. This allows intermediate and advanced carvers to perfect their technique without the suffering consequences for small mistakes.  And third is the way this board is designed for freecarvers and not racers.  These features are found in the amount of edge angle that this board can achieve, in the way it wants to initiate gracefully without the "stivot" (the steer-pivot that keeps the racers' moving down the hill with speed towards the next gate), and in the way it wants to finish it's turns facing across the fall line, a place that racers don't want to find themselves.

I have a brand new G4 168 with a 296mm waist and three G4 171s with 300mm waists for sale if anyone is interested.  I'm gonna put them up in the store and send an email to the waitlist in a few days, but if anyone sees this post and wants one, they are ready to ship!  These are the C4s for the bigger riders with larger boots.  Mid Flex all.  There will likely be another run of these in the winter, but we're focusing on the G4 162 next since that seems to be the most popular size.

G4 168 with a 296mm waist

G4 171s with 300mm waists

G4 162

That’s a bit wider and/or longer than the C4 right? Except for the 162 that stays the same length with an unknown width.

It IS the C4, in two new sizes with a new topsheet and base diecut.  Otherwise identical.

The original C4 is the 166, 292mm waists.  The second size was the 162 with 286mm waists.  These sizes will continue to be available but only the larger ones are in stock today.

Seems the 162 is the most popular size but I think riders will want even more width once they feel how much angulation these boards can achieve and they start to experience the boot drag that comes with it.  It's sometimes hard to convince riders to venture so far from their comfort zone and the boards they're used to.  Even the 162 has 139cm effective edge, which is already 15 to 20cm longer than many of the production class boards of the same length.   The 162 may seem like a small board by comparison but it sure doesn't ride like one!  It's plenty fast and stable, stiffer than production boards and a big step up for most riders.

As far as I know, the 162 is wider than any available production board available now.  Hence "Big Snowboards"...

The future of soft boot carving boards is wide for sure, but the acceptance of that will take some time.  People need to get comfortable with the idea of wide boards along with the feeling, plus there are so many factors that determine the ideal width...

I've come to understand that there is no such thing as the "ideal width for a certain rider", but that we should be talking about "the ideal width for a certain rider on a certain board model, on a certain day in certain conditions on a specific run with given crowding...".  So I'm happy to put a client a 162 even if I know it might feel small after a season or two because even then it'll still have a crucial place in their quiver and they'll still want to ride that 162 sometimes when the surface is firm and fast, or the runs are narrow, or for weekend crowding or early season confidence building.  Also, the mega wides can feel a bit cumbersome at first when it's a rider's first wide carving board, while the smaller boards generally feel great right out of the box so the rider might have a better initial experience on day one, which is also important for motivation, satisfaction, and simple enjoyment of the sport.

Really though, the waist difference is only 6mm between the C4 162 and 166 (286 versus 292mm), and my widest board right now is only a 300mm, so they're all well within the range for all but the smallest and biggest riders.  (Other sizes and models may be coming soon.)

"and three G4 171s with 300mm waists for sale if anyone is interested. "

Hi James, happy to discuss this in private if you still have those for sale. I just subscribed to the waitlist just in case, and couldn't see them listed in the Shop.

Cheers

Hey @robinb,

All of those 171s are all sold now but there's one G4 168 left.  It's also a mid flex, 296 in the waist, 13m average sidecut.  Second from the left in the photo.  Email me at jamescherry@carversconnection.com or PM me here.

(The one on the far left with the JJA logo might could be the last wide board ever built with the JJA logo and C4 embossed.  Collector's item?  Also sold...)

And welcome to the forum!

G4, G5 168 171

@rocketman69 You probably have me confused with someone else, I’m based in Sweden so I’ll be in France and Sweden this season only.

@ice-coast-carver Hi, I live in Saint-Sauveur right at the base of Mont-Habitant. I should be getting my C4 at the end of this week. Looks like we will be getting a little teaser snow fall tonight.

@flyguy Looks like Saint-Sauveur opened today for a teaser.  I'll let you know if I head up your way once the season gets started.
